social trading networks – Where to start?

Posted by admin On July - 28 - 2010

By Jonathan Dayan |

Social trading – where traders cooperate with each other to coordinate their trading strategies and share their expertise – has been one of the big news stories in the online financial trading world over the last twelve months. Social trading networks in particular are the latest important innovation to emerge in online trading. As Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and others have continued to grow at an explosive rate their example has not been lost on the financial trading community. There are now several companies actively engaged in delivering or developing some form of social trading network. All these companies are following in the footsteps of the original pioneer of the social trading niche eToro (www.eToro.com). With more financial trading companies developing more social networking tools all the time it seems like social trading is the hot new phenomenon of the moment. Here is a brief look at some of the key players in the social trading movement.

Twitter

Twitter is widely used by the financial trading community because it lets traders share information and communicate with each other easily. Twitter is well suited to day traders and scalpers who are seeking to share and acquire new information quickly, because the information contained on it is constantly being updated and added to. More and more traders are active on Twitter all the time and more and more brokers are using it as an opportunity to communicate with traders.

eToro.com

The original social trading network, and still the biggest by miles with over one million registered users, eToro was the first of the major Forex trading platforms to offer sophisticated community features to its trading communities. According to its CEO Johnathan Assia “eToro’s mission from the beginning has been to make financial trading accessible to everyone … by transforming the lonely art of investing into an exciting collaborative activity.” The offering on the eToro platform includes a trader messaging feature with both public and private chat options which enable eToro traders to communicate with one another and share tips. There’s also a traders insight tool which reveals how the top 1000 traders on the eToro platform are trading the market and which gives every user a chance to see for themselves which direction market sentiment is going in. In addition eToro offers a range of traders’ forums where traders can discuss topics of interest and a regular series of trading championships where traders compete with each other to win cash prizes based on their trading prowess.

Currensee

Currensee developed the first social network exclusively for forex traders. Through the Currensee interface currency traders can display their preferred trading styles, share their trading history and cooperate in trading “teams” who trade together and watch each other’s trading positions. Currensee is only open to active forex traders with money in their accounts, who are required to link their trading account to Currensee in order to get access to the service. Although Currensee is restricted to Forex trading – which limits its appeal for the wider trading community – it is an important pioneer in the social trading world, setting an example which other products have subsequently built upon.

Stock Twits

Stock Twits is an exciting addition to the social trading fold. Stock Twits develops the format pioneered by Twitter to connect traders to each other through up to 140 characters. Traders can use Stock Twits in much the same way they’d use Twitter; to spread, comment on and discuss any rumors, tips, gossip or advice relating to financial trading which they choose to share. StockTwits is a free to join service which enables traders to interact with each other directly and share as much knowledge as they can within the limitations of 140 characters.

OpenBook from eToro

The newest addition to the social trading movement – OpenBook – is being talked about as the next big leap forwards in social trading. It’s a free to join social network designed to help all financial traders get more out of their trading by enabling every trader to see, follow and copy the trading activity of any of the one million members of the eToro trading community they choose. OpenBook is a grand experiment in the possibilities of social trading designed to deliver a richer and more rewarding trading experience for every trader. Novice traders can use OpenBook to directly mimic the trading activity of expert traders, offering them a way to start trading the markets even before they’ve acquired significant financial trading knowledge for themselves. Professional traders can use the OpenBook to acquire “guru” status: by acquiring followers on the OpenBook they can earn monthly rewards which they can put towards their trading. For all traders OpenBook offers enormous potential for knowledge sharing, interaction and learning as traders follow, communicate and learn from each other. OpenBook opens up the relationship between traders as never before and can help every trader gain new perspectives on the financial markets; without having to pay for the opportunity, or rely on the favors of their broker. If you’re interested to see how social trading works for yourself you can visit the OpenBook for free by clicking here.
